Huge Production "Light Of The World" Set For Conference Center

Tickets, Schedule

News Release/Extra Info

Sept. 19, 2001--

When visitors come to Salt Lake during the Olympics, they'll now have an option to watch a huge multi- media production in the Conference Center of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Religion Specialist Carole Mikita has details on the show.

When the Conference Center was built, church leaders said it would be used for some musical events. This production is enormous in number of entertainers,

Singers, actors, even flying dancers are all part of a huge church production to premiere in February during the Winter Games.

Producers say the main reason for all of this is to contribute to visitors' experiences here.

Steve Lindsley/Exec. Producer: "OUR MANDATE FOR THE PRODUCTION IS TO TRY AND LEAVE A TREMENDOUS LEGACY OF GOOD WILL, TO TRY TO PARTICIPATE WITH OTHER COMMUNITY EVENTS THAT WILL BE GOING ON."

For this production, the Conference Center will be replaced. The wood paneling, the choir seats, the organ and the pipes will disappear and a huge screen and stage will take their place.

The mobile screen is four times the size of an IMAX theatre. It will stretch across the width of the auditorium, with 1500 performers portraying 100 different cultures and their costumes.

It's big but the idea, the actors say, it not to overwhelm audiences but touch them.

Al Harrington/principal actor: "I WOULD LIKE IT TO JUST BE GOOD ENTERTAINMENT FOR THE PEOPLE WHO WOULD COME AND THEY WOULD SEE THAT THE PEOPLE OF UTAH ARE WONDERFUL."

The show's purpose, say church leaders, is to celebrate that which inspires greatness, even the Olympic spirit.

Elder Robert D. Hales/Quorum of the Twelve Apostles: "WHILE WE CAN TALK ABOUT THE LIGHT WITHIN THAT INSPIRES US AND WE ALL UNDERSTAND THAT, WE ALSO WANT TO TALK ABOUT THE SOURCE OF THAT LIGHT, AND THE FACT THAT THAT'S WHAT MAKES THE CHILDREN OF GOD COME TOGETHER."

Tickets for Light of the World go on sale Oct. 9th at 10 am mountain time and are $5 each, with a 10- ticket limit per person.

There will be 10 performances-- seven evenings and three matinees, starting February 7th.
