Thursday, May 10, 2001-- Dalai Lama: "ONCE YOU ACCEPT RELIGION, THEN YOU SHOULD FOLLOW IT PROPERLY, SINCERELY."

The Dalai Lama makes an historic trip to Utah.

It is not to change people's minds about religion, but to promote peace and understanding.

The man revered by millions-- a Nobel Prize winner -- the Dalai Lama, offered his first greetings to Utahns.

He's holding an inter-faith meeting at Abravanel Hall Friday morning. The message is not just one of religion, but Tibetan Culture and individual happiness. Judging by ticket response, many Utahns are drawn to the man and his message.

The Dalai Lama arrived at the airport with his trademark smile and bow, and emphasized the importance of every community's religious traditions.

Dalai Lama: "MY BELIEF IS EACH NATION, EACH PEOPLE, EACH AREA, THEY HAVE THEIR OWN TRADITIONS."

Utah's Governor and LDS Church Leaders welcomed him as a visiting dignitary.

He also comforted young patients at Primary Children's Medical Center. Here, he reaffirmed the message that inner peace promotes well being.

"THEY CONFIRMED THAT FOR HEALTH AND ALSO TO CURE ILLNESS, THAT PEACE OF MIND IS VERY ESSENTIAL AND HUMAN AFFECTION IS VERY ESSENTIAL."

As he speaks over the next two days, there likely won't be many empty seats. People quickly snatched up 30,000 tickets.

Rt. Rev. Carolyn Tanner Irish/Bishop Episcopal Diocese of Utah: "IT'S VERY POWERFUL TO BE IN THE PRESENCE OF SOMEONE WHO IS NOT AFRAID. AND HE DOES NOT PLAY GAMES AND HE DOESN'T HAVE AN IMAGE THAT HAS TO DEFEND."

"AS I TOLD SOME OTHER STUDENTS, IT ONLY POINTS TO THE GOOD KARMA THAT THIS WHOLE AREA HAS."

But when asked what draws such widespread interest, even the Dalai Lama jokes.

"I DON'T KNOW. I BELIEVE NOTHING SPECIAL.. MY TEACHING OR MY OPINION."

"THE TIBETAN CULTURE HELP TO DEVELOP CERTAIN KIND OF PEACEFUL ATTITUDES, TOWARDS ONESELF, TOWARDS FELLOW HUMAN BEING."

While he's in town, he'll address some of those issues we already heard, and try to raise awareness about the plight of Tibet.

We're told the money raised from the 30,000 tickets will go to humanitarian causes.
