Governor Mike Leavitt was hoping he wouldn't be invovled in Tuesday's primary election.
But he's facing a challenger who has snagged the attention of many Utah Republicans.
Political specialist Richard Piatt has a profile on the primary race between Mike Leavitt and Glen Davis.
May 17th: They are people cheering for change.
Their man: Glen Davis, fresh from an empowering vote of confidence at the State Republican Convention.
Their goal: put Davis in the Governor's office.
It wasn't cheers, but jeers that signaled those same sentiments for Governor Mike Leavitt at the convention.
For Leavitt, it was a wake up call.
Since then, the Governor has adjusted his style a bit.
Reaching out to people across the state, he's listening more, he says.
His main message: Maintain the state's momentum on education, quality of life.
Governor Mike Leavitt: THE CONVENTION WAS VERY CLEAR. THEY WANTED WHOEVER WAS GOING TO REPRESENT THE REPUBLICAN PARTY TO EARN IT. AND THAT'S WHAT I'M ABOUT RIGHT NOW.
The ups and downs of politics have already touched Davis and his family.
Davis says he's open to it because of worries over big government.
And because he says Leavitt has gone soft on abortion and second amendment issues.
Glen Davis/R-Candidate For Governor: I THINK THE ISSUE IS PRINCIPLE. I THINK TOO OFTEN ELECTED OFFICIALS MOLD THEIR OPINION ON WHAT WILL BE MOST POPULAR. AND I THINK WE NEED TO BE STRICT TO PRINCIPLE. WHEN SOMEONE VOTES FOR GLEN DAVIS THEY'LL KNOW EXACTLY WHERE I STAND.
Richard Piatt, Eyewitness News: THE CAMPAIGN TRIAL HAS BEEN A LEARNING EXPERIENCE FOR BOTH DAVIS AND LEAVIT. DAVIS, AS THE POLITICAL NEWCOMER. LEAVITT, WHO IS FINDING THAT TOURING THE STATE IS MUCH DIFFERENT AS A CANDIDATE.
Both Governor Leavitt and Glen Davis have been touring the state, encouraging people to vote in the Primary on Tuesday.
