Campaign Contributions

Oct. 31, 1999

Salt Lake mayoral candidates Rocky Anderson and Stuart Reid have been spending tens of thousands of dollars on everything from TV ads to flyers to lawn signs.

But where is the money coming from? News Specialist John Daley has the answer.

Rocky Anderson and Stuart Reid.

Eyewitness News poured over each campaign's contribution lists from the last three filing dates and found some interesting trends.

Anderson is getting more money than Reid from smaller donors.

Reid outpaces Anderson when it comes to 4-figure contributions.

Anderson got 170 contributions of $100 or less--more than twice as many as Reid. Anderson also has more than twice as many contributors giving under $1,000.

Reid leads Anderson in donations of more than $1,000, $4,000 and the maximum allowed--$7,500.

Rocky Anderson/Candidate for Mayor: "I think that's a clear indication of what kind of people are supporting each of our campaigns. I've got support from so many individuals."

Stuart Reid/Candidate for Mayor: "I have hundreds and hundreds of donors that have contributed to my campaign, so I'm not sure that says anything. I obviously have significant support from the business community, which I've encouraged because I want Salt Lake City to be a business-friendly community."

A look at individual contributors shows Anderson received $7,500 from Salt Lake firefighters, $7,500 from billboard company owner William Reagan and his wife, $5,000 from Fidelity Investments, and $500 from both Main Street business Sam Weller's books and the satire Saturday's Voyeur.

Reid got $3,000 from the city union AFSCME, $2,000 from Police Chief Ruben Ortega and money from a long list of construction companies and developers: $1,000 from Layton Construction, $2,500 from Ivory Homes and $7,500 each from Howa Construction and Gateway District developer the Boyer Company.

Rocky Anderson/Candidate for Mayor: "There's no way you can get all these $7,500 contributions from the largest developer and construction companies and once you get into office not be beholden to them."

Stuart Reid/Candidate for Mayor: "I want their support. I want them to be involved in the city. I want them to do development, particularly in the downtown area, and I'm going to do everything I can to encourage that development, because that's in the best interest of the city."
