Poll: Salt Lake Mayor's Race

Oct. 30, 1999

According to results of a KSL-Deseret News poll released Saturday afternoon, Salt Lake City has a front runner in the race for mayor.

The poll shows Rocky Anderson leading against Stuart Reid, but it's still a race where anything could happen.

Political Specialist Richard Piatt has more on the results.

There have been a lot of debates and a lot of news coverage in this race for mayor. And in the last few days, a clear frontrunner has emerged.

Salt Lake City Mayor Poll

  • Rocky Anderson 48%
  • Stuart Reid 35%
  • Undecided/No Answer 17%
+/-3.2%

Results of a KSL-Deseret News poll of 960 registered voters shows that Rocky Anderson is leading in the race for Salt Lake City mayor, 48 to 35 percent.

But undecided voters could still swing the race in Reid's favor at the last minute, depending on the final days of the campaign.

It's been a campaign of issues, for the most part. But there have also been charges of negative campaigning. It's a charge voters have apparently not picked up on.

Negative Campaigning

  • Not Negative/Same 61%
  • More Negative 23%
  • Don't Know 16%

The poll shows that 61 percent feel the Anderson-Reid race has been less negative or just as negative as other recent political campaigns. 23 percent say they think it's been more negative, 16 percent say they don't know.

Religion An Issue?

  • No 71%
  • Yes 24%
  • Don't Know 4%

Another issue raised itelf in recent weeks: Religion. The results show most people, 71 percent, feel religious involvement or affiliation is not a legitimate issue.

Religion A Deciding Factor?

  • No 78%
  • Yes 19%
  • Don't Know 3%

They also strongly indicate religion is not a deciding factor in choosing a candidate, by a 78-to-19 percent margin.

Votes For Anderson

  • Catholic 74%
  • Protestant 68%
  • None 78%]

An interesting paradox to those results indicates that Catholics and Protestants are more likely to vote for Rocky Anderson.

Vote For Reid

  • LDS 59%

LDS voters are more likely to vote for Stuart Reid.

Political analyst Dan Jones suggests LDS voters tend to support Republican candidates, and Republicans tend to support Reid more than Anderson.

Dan Jones/Political Analyst:"But it also could come down to political affiliation. Even though both candidates are democrats, there's no question, Reid has got to get the Republican vote. And I don't know if Republicans are going to support him."
