Cancer Survival Rate Increases

A new report out today says more people survived cancer last year than the year before, and early detection rates are up.

According to the American Cancer Society, 1.2 million new cancer cases will be diagnosed this year and 200,000 of them will be breast cancer.

The five year overall survival rate for all cancers is 62 percent. That's a two percent increase from 1999.

Despite the numbers experts say more needs to be done.

DR. ROBERT YOUNG, PRESIDENT, AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY: "IN THE NEXT TEN OR FIFTEEN YEARS, UNLESS WE ACCELERATE THE PACE AND PROGRESS, WE'RE GOING TO SEE CANCER REPLACE HEART DISEASE AS THE MOST COMMON CAUSE OF DEATH IN THE UNITED STATES."
