It's happening far too often, and killing far too many babies.
That's why the fourth national conference on shaken baby syndrome kicks off this week in Salt Lake City. Experts want to educate and eliminate the problem.
News Specialist Jill Atwood has the story.
Ryan Sander is ten years old, but he has the mental capacity of a baby.
That's because at just 8 weeks old, his babysitter shook him to stop his inconsolable crying.
Kathy Sander/Mother of Shaken Baby Victim - HIS WHOLE BRAIN IS TOTALLY GONE..HE HAS CEREBAL PALSY HE'S BEEN WALKING FOR TWO YEARS..HE'S NON VERBAL HE'S INCONTINENT AND HE'S SEVERLY AND PROFOUNDLY RETARDED.
His mother Kathy attends these conferences whenever possible. She wants Ryan's story heard so others can learn from it, and take steps to prevent such tragedies.
She's also responsible for this dramatic billboard on I-15. it shows Ryan as a baby in intensive care.
Kim Morrell/New Mom - YOU JUST WANT TO CRY..YOU JUST WANT TO CRY WITH THEM..IT'S LIKE WHY WONT YOU STOP I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO.
Kim Morrell is a new mom, and showed up today to get some advice..her little Charlie cries a lot..especially at night.
But in listening to Dr. Ronald Barr, she realized she's not alone.
She also learned that long bouts of crying is very normal...it doesn't mean there is anything wrong with her baby, or that there is anything wrong with her parenting.
Ronald Barr M.D./Professor Pediatrics & Psychiatry - WE WANT MOTHERS AND CAREGIVERS TO SPEND AS MUCH TIME WITH THEIR INFANTS AT THEY CAN....THIS IS EFFECTIVE IN REDUCING THE OVERALL AMOUNT OF CRYING EVEN THOUGH IT DOENS'T TAKE IT ALL AWAY IT DOENS'T TAKE THE RESISTENT SOOTHING BOUTS AWAY EITHER BUT ALL OF THIS HELPS.
But sometimes, Dr. Barr says when frustration peaks it's necessary to just walk away.
Lay your baby down in a safe place before you do something you'll regret.
The conference does go on throughout the weekend at the Little America Hotel.
