Quilts For Burn Patients

Feb. 9, 2001-- A boy scout in South Ogden turned his Eagle Project into a way to help people suffering from the same injuries that nearly took his life.

News Specialist Carole Mikita has the story.

This time, Tyler Munson was smiling when he arrived at the University of Utah Burn Center.

Fifteen years ago, he almost lost his life when he climbed into a bathtub full of scalding water and burned half his body.

It's an experience his mother will never forget.

Jody Munson/Tyler mother: "THEY GAVE HIM A FIVE PERCENT CHANCE TO LIVE. THEY TOLD ME HE'D NEVER MAKE IT THROUGH THE NIGHT."

But Tyler pulled through, and after three months of surgery and therapy, doctors released him to go home.

Now a fully functioning Tyler has found a way to thank the burn unit. With the help of other scouts and the young men and women in his LDS Ward, Tyler made quilts for burn center patients.

The project makes his father proud.

Kevin Munson/Tyler father: "IN A SMALL WAY PAYING BACK THE BURN CENTER FOR ALL THEY DID FOR HIM."

Tyler - and those who helped him - delivered the quilts this week, and were even allowed to place them gently on some patients' beds.

Tyler Munson/Scout: "THEY'RE FOR THE PATIENTS, TO GIVE TO THEM WHEN THEY GO HOME."

Although he can't remember his experience at the center, Tyler says he identifies with those who are there now.

Tyler Munson/Scout: "BECAUSE I'M A BURN PATIENT AND I JUST WANTED TO GIVE BACK TO THE BURN CENTER."

The hospital need quilts and blankets, since nurses send them home with patients. If you can help, contact the burn unit at 581-2008.
