I-15 Construction Updates

April 5, 2001--

Salt Lake's new 5th South freeway on ramp to I-15 is set to open Monday.

But to do that, crews need to shut down the freeway this weekend once again.

The new ramp will allow drivers to travel south on I-15.

At the same time, the temporary southbound on ramp at 4th South will close.

The weekend closures start Friday night at 10.

Northbound lanes will be closed from 5300 South to 600 North. And southbound, from the 9th West exit to 21st South.

The freeway will open again, Monday morning at 6:00.

April 4, 2001--

Some overnight freeway closures to be aware of in Utah County.

Northbound I-15 will be closed at the University Parkway Interchange (1200 South) from
11 pm to 5 am

  • Wed. & Thurs., April 4-5

  • Tues. & Wed. April 10-11
Northbound traffic will be diverted through the on and off ramps during the closure. Expect slight delays.

Southbound I-15 will be closed at the same interchange

  • Saturday morning, April 7-- 1 am - 6 am

  • Sunday morning, April 8-- 1 am - 7 am

  • Mon. & Tues. morning, April 9 & 10-- 1 am - 5 am
Crews will be setting supports for the new freeway bridge.

Traffic going southbound will need to take Orem Center Street or 800 North to Geneva Road. From Geneva Road motorists can reconnect to southbound I-15 at Provo Center Street.

Southbound traffic should expect moderate delays.

March 30, 2001--

The decision is in on whether UDOT can begin construction Monday on a new interchange at 114th South. Several residents who live near the proposed interchange are opposed to it, and they went to court to try to stop it.

Airport Detour

March 28, 2001--

If you usually take I-80 westbound to the Salt Lake International Airport, get ready for a detour.

The I-80 westbound ramp to the airport closed Wednesday and remains closed until this Fall.

Crews will also close North Temple below the ramp. That street will reopen April 12. It will not affect traffic westbound on North Temple headed to the airport.

Recent inspections show the ramp is shifting due to warm weather. As a precautionary measure and to ensure public safety, UDOT has decided to demolish the ramp and rebuild it.

You can still get to the airport using west I-215, Bangerter Highway, or North Temple.

Alternate Route Details

  • From I-15 to westbound I-80 to airport
Traffic will detour from I-80 onto Redwood Road, from Redwood Road to North Temple. North Temple will take you to the airport.

Or, you can continue westbound on I-80 and turn around at 5600 West, then use eastbound I-80 to get to the airport.

  • Redwood Road, Northbound & Southbound
Traffic will detour to North Temple and continue on North Temple to the airport.

  • North Temple Westbound
Continue westbound on North Temple to get to the airport.

Alternate Routes to westbound I-80, traveling beyond the airport

  • SB and NB I-215 to WB I-80
Take the immediate connection to WB I-80. If you miss the connection, continue to the airport and turn around at the southernmost interchange and connect to WB I-80.

  • SB I-215 to Bangerter Highway
Use the first ramp to WB I-80. This is an immediate connection.

  • Redwood Road to WB I-80
    No detour

  • North Temple to WB I-80
Turn from North Temple onto southbound Redwood Road to access I-80 westbound.

Reconstruction Milestone

Crews place the final girder of the massive I-15 reconstruction project Wednesday. The 113 foot steel girder will support the new bridge that is being built over the railroad tracks to create the new 2100 South surface street.

When the I-15 reconstruction project is complete, it will include a total of 142 bridges built throughout the entire 17 mile corridor of the project.
