School Policies on Smoggy Days

Jan. 3, 2001- Our bad air is certainly reason for concern especially with our kids. So, what are schools doing with children running around outside during school recess?

Students were on the playground yesterday, but Tuesday in Provo, school leaders kept the kids inside.

The Provo district has an inversion procedure.

Patti Harrington/Provo School District: "IF THE AIR GETS BAD WE CAUTION PRINCIPALS TO BE CAREFUL ABOUT HOW MUCH THEY'RE ASKING THE KIDS TO GO OUT, AND CERTAINLY TO BE CAREFUL IN P.E. SETTINGS WITH HOW MUCH KIDS ARE EXERTING THEIR ENERGY."

Along the Wasatch Front, in the state's largest school district there's no formal recess policy.

But administrators say they'll allow students to stay in who have special health needs.

Barry Newbold/Jordan School District: "WE REALLY RELY ON PARENTS TO TELL US THAT WE NEED TO KEEP THEIR SON OR DAUGHTER IN DURING RECESS TIME."

Parents in Jordan, Granite, Salt Lake, Murray and Davis school districts need to contact the principal if they want their kids to stay inside.
