Dirty Air Blankets Wasatch Front

Dec. 29, 2000-- An inversion combines with fog to blanket much of the Wasatch Front with icky air!

One look outside and you'll wish you were in the mountains, or anywhere you don't have to breathe the gunky stuff!

Smog Dilemma

The dirty air isn't only unpleasant to look at, it's unhealthy to breathe, as well.

The State Department of Air Quality classifies the air as "unhealthful" in Salt Lake and Davis Counties. That means particulates make the air unhealthy even for people without lung problems.

There's a health advisory out for people with heart or respiratory problems to reduce physical activities as much as possible and stay inside if you can.

In Utah County, air quality is "moderate," and it's "good" in Weber County and Logan.

Salt Lake and Davis Counties are under a yellow alert-- meaning they should voluntarily limit driving and lighting wood-burning fires.

And, this yucky air won't necessarily go away anytime soon. D.A.Q. predicts it may hang around into next week.
