Student-Built Homes

Are you looking to buy a new home? How about one built almost entirely by high school students?

The homes are quite impressive.

Education Specialist Sandra Yi gives us a sneak peak at the Granite district's home show.

Stephanie Sundberg remembers when this property was just a dirt lot. One year later - sits a luxury home with four bedrooms and 2 and half baths.

Stephanie Sundberg/Home Construction Student: "I THINK IT'S PRETTY COOL THAT THE STUDENTS COULD BUILD IT. I DIDN'T AT FIRST THINK THAT WE COULD DO IT, BUT WE DID A PRETTY GOOD JOB."

Inside... there are vaulted ceilings, a large kitchen, and a master suite with a Jacuzzi tub.

Hundreds of students from the Granite district high schools did nearly all the work inside and out.

Instructors say the finished project is comparable to the work of professionals.

Myrl Thurston/Project Manager: "THE STUDENTS ARE INSTRUCTED BY LICENSED CONTRACTORS AND WE TAKE THE TIME NECESSARY TO TEACH THEM HOW TO DO IT RIGHT."

Daniel Shoemaker/Home Construction Student: "MAN, I NEVER IMAGINED SOMETHING LIKE THIS WHEN WE STARTED THE CLASS."

Sandra Yi/Education Specialist: "THIS HOME IS SELLING FOR 360 THOUSAND DOLLARS. THE OTHER HOMES START AT ABOUT 170 THOUSAND."

This one-story home down the block is more than 22 hundred square feet. It also has 4 bedrooms and 2 and a half baths.

Interior design students decorated the place - for show.

Megan Fenton/Interior Design Student: "IT HELPED ME FIGURE OUT HOW I WANTED TO DO MY HOUSE AND THE THINGS THAT I LIKED AND JUST WHERE TO PUT EVERYTHING AND HOW EVERYTHING FITS TOGETHER."

The district sells the homes and uses the money to fund its home construction program.

Students say the project is a great learning experience. In fact, many of them will go on to have careers in construction and design.

The open house continues tomorrow afternoon - and all day Saturday and Sunday.
