Tough Times Ahead for Education Budget

Utah's public education budget... is facing its biggest crisis, in more than a decade.

And, today... educators went before lawmakers, to plead their case. But, lawmakers say... times are tough for everybody.

Mike Bennett/Iron County Superintendent: "HOW IN THE WORLD CAN WE LEAVE NO CHILD BEHIND IF WE'RE NOT MAKING INVESTMENTS, IF WE'RE MAKING CUTS?"

Rep. Marda Dillree/Co-chair Pulic Education Appr.:"WHEN YOU LOOK AT THE OVERALL BUDGET AND THE FACT THAT WE'RE ONLY CUTTING ABOUT 1.49 PERCENT OUT OF EDUCATION, WE FEEL FORTUNATE THAT THERE AREN'T DEEPER CUTS."

Legislators, asked members of the Utah School Boards Association and Superintendents ... to come up with their own proposal, to cut 25- point- 2 million dollars from the budget.

They say... they'll take today's recommendations, into next week's special session... where they will address ALL the state's proposed budget cuts.
