Nov. 3, 2000-- More students come forward, and there are more calls for action, after an incident at West High that, students say, demonstrates there's a problem with religious discrimination.
Three students were kicked out of class this week, allegedly for having their copies of a Book of Mormon on their desks.
Now a growing number of teens say it isn't an isolated incident.
Education Specialist Nadine Wimmer reports.
Nichelle Taylor/Student: "SHE MAKES IT VERY CLEAR THAT SHE DOES NOT LIKE MORMONS, VERY CLEAR."
TERESA POWELL/PARENT: "THAT MAKES ME VERY UNEASY AND I WANT TO KNOW WHAT THE SCHOOL IS GOING TO DO ABOUT IT."
That's the growing question as the group of students who say they've experienced religious bias at West High School expands.
Three students were escorted out of class by security this week, when a teacher took offense to the scriptures they'd brought to class for free reading time.
Students say this wasn't an isolated incident, but an ongoing problem.
BRADEN MOLYNEUX/STUDENT: "I DIDN'T THINK IT WOULD BE EVEN CONSIDERED BECAUSE IT'S HAPPENED BEFORE, KIDS HAVE SAID THINGS BEFORE AND NOTHING COMES OF IT."
Some parents have joined forces with attorneys and the American Civil Liberties Union.
Though, the irony of that move isn't lost.
Just a few years ago, the ACLU backed a Jewish student, Rachel Bauchman, who sued the school for discrimination over Christian songs sung in a Christmas choir program.
Now, the ACLU could potentially side with LDS students fighting discrimination from a Jewish teacher, at the same school.
Many students don't plan to return to the same English class, until they're somehow assured they have a teacher who can respect beliefs different from hers.
"I DON'T WANT TO BE IN THAT KIND OF ENVIRONMENT. THAT'S NOT THE KIND OF ENVIRONMENT I LIKE."
"WE RESPECT THAT, WE DON'T DO ANYTHING TO OFFEND THAT AND WE'D LIKE THE SAME IN RETURN."
West High's principal is out sick today, so no word yet on what they've learned from the investigation of the students who were escorted out of class.
