Traffic Law Reminder

Source: Salt Lake City Police Dept.

The Salt Lake City Police Department would like to take this opportunity to reiterate some of the traffic laws which will be enforced during the next week that are specifically applicable to the start of the traditional school year.

School zone speed limits are set at twenty (20) miles per hour. Some school zones have flashing lights to help alert drivers to the presence of a school zone. Some school zones only have signs posted indicating that a driver is approaching a school crossing. Salt Lake City Police Officers will be enforcing the twenty-mile per hour speed limit in all school zones throughout Salt Lake City.

Crossing guards are empowered to stop vehicular traffic when functioning in that capacity at those school crossings where they are stationed. Please be cognizant of the presence of the crossing guard, and follow their instructions at the school crossings accordingly.

Drivers may not pass a school bus stopped with red lights flashing, or a stop arm extended, or a combination of both, from either direction.

Drivers should be aware that traffic regulations also require that pedestrians lawfully within a crosswalk be given the right of way. Any pedestrian who is in the driver's half of the roadway, or so close as to constitute an immediate hazard, must be given the right of way in the crosswalk.

Traffic regulations also prohibit a driver of a vehicle from passing another vehicle traveling in the same direction that is stopped at a crosswalk to allow a pedestrian to cross the roadway.
