Wrongfully accused.
That's what a former rape suspect says now that he has been released from jail.
Salt Lake County Sheriff's detectives say they didn't have enough evidence to hold Paul Black for the rape of a Taylorsville woman, so they let him go.
Crime Specialist Karen Scullin talked with Black today and has his side of the story.
Paul Black/Former Suspect: "I TOLD THEM I WASN'T CONFESSING TO SOMETHING I DIDN'T DO."
))
Today was Paul Black's first full day of freedom in five days. Last Thursday, he was walking down the street when a Salt Lake County detective thought he resembled a man wanted for a rape in the neighborhood.
Paul Black: "I WALK THROUGH THAT AREA ALL THE TIME TO GO TO MY GRANDMA'S HOUSE."
Detectives felt the similarities between Black and the composite sketch of the rape suspect was enough to book him into jail.
Paul Black: "THEY INTERROGATED ME FOR SIX HOURS. I TOLD THEM I AIN'T CONFESSING TO NOTHIN'. YOU CAN JUST TAKE ME TO JAIL OR HOME."
So they kept him in jail.
County detectives felt they had enough evidence.
The victim picked Black out of a photo lineup, saying she was 80 percent sure it was the man who raped her. She also remembered her attacker as being shorter than her. She's five-six, Black is five-one.
Detectives say they had a responsibility to charge him, hold him, and wait for the DNA results.
Peggy Faulkner/Salt Lake Co. Sheriff's Office: "IF WE HAD BY CHANCE LET HIM OUT AND HE HAD REOFFENDED AND RAPED ANOTHER PERSON, WHO'S RESPONSIBLE FOR THAT?"
But the DNA did not match, and Black was let go.
Karen Scullin: "WHAT DID YOU DO WHEN YOU GOT HOME?" Paul Black: "HUGGED MY MOM AND DAD."
Black says he's been in jail before for non-violent crimes and thought he would never go back.
So, he says, the ordeal has been painful.
Paul Black: "I'M MAD AT THE SYSTEM, UH, I FEEL BAD FOR THE LADY AFTER SEEING HER PICTURES AND STUFF 'CAUSE, YA KNOW, THAT GUY DID SOMETHING BAD TO HER, YA KNOW."
But with Black out of jail, that means someone else brutally raped and robbed a Taylorsville woman, and is still out there. Detectives have not said if they have any other suspects.
