Detectives need your help in solving a fourteen year old murder.
The twist in this case is they have a good idea who the suspect is.
What they need is a body.
In our ongoing UTAP "Murder Mystery" series, here's Crime Specialist Karen Scullin.
Rhonda Fae Karren loved
her little home in the country... trying hard to keep it as nice as possible.
Audrey Slaugh/Victim's Mother: IT WAS KEPT SPOTLESS. AND EVERYTHING HAD IT'S PLACE AND EVERYTHING'D BETTER STAY IN IT'S PLACE.
But fourteen years ago, the night of September
28th, 1987, something happened....
something
terrible.
Her little house became a crime scene.
Det. Sgt. Keith Campbell/Uintah County Sheriff's Office: THERE WERE OBVIOUS SIGNS OF A STRUGGLE. THERE WERE ITEMS THAT SHOULDN'T HAVE BEEN WHERE THEY WERE, THERE WERE ITEMS OUT OF PLACE. THERE WAS INDICATION THAT THERE WERE SOME DRAG MARKS. IT WAS OBVIOUS A STRUGGLE HAD OCCURRED.
Rhonda Fae Karren was never seen again.
Karen Scullin/Eyewitness News: INVESTIGATORS GATHERED ENOUGH EVIDENCE FROM THE HOUSE HERE TO CONVINCE THEM THAT RHONDA FAE KARREN WAS MURDERED. THE PROBLEM IS, THEY DON'THAVE A BODY YET. BUT THEY DO HAVE A SUSPECT.
But he's never been arrested, despite the fact that right after the apparent murder, detectives questioned the man they believe to this day killed the victim.
So, after fourteen years, investigators are still working the case, still hoping to solve the mystery.
Sgt. Keith Campbell: WE'RE FACT FINDERS. WE ASSEMBLE THE PIECES OF THE PUZZLE AND THIS PUZZLE HAD NEVER BEEN ASSEMBLED. IT WASN'T FINISHED. IT WAS A JOB THAT WASN'T DONE YET.
Audrey Slaugh: TIME DOESN'T HEAL ALL WOUNDS, YOU KNOW.
Detectives believe several people in the Vernal area may have the key to unlocking this case,
and add even though fourteen years have passed, no murder should go unsolved.
