A cold, senseless murder four years ago in Ogden claimed the life of a 20-year-old woman, and her killer is still on the loose.
Debbie Jones was having a small party at her house when she was shot and killed.
Police say there were many witnesses, yet no one has come forward.
Her fiance and six-year-old son hope you can help.
Crime Specialist Karen Scullin has today's Murder Mystery.
The murder happened about 3:00 in the morning on November 2, 1997.
Since then, no one has called police to help put the killer behind bars. And investigators believe there are still several people in the area who might have some answers.
Alex Martinez was home the
night his mother was killed. But several years later,
the six-year-old doesn't remember much about that dreadful night.
Vince Moore/Neighbor/Nov. 2, 1997: "I JUST HEARD THE LOUD GUNSHOTS AND LOOKED OUT THE WINDOW AND EVERYBODY WAS JUST SCATTERING ALL OVER THE PLACE IN PANIC."
There were two parties. A fight broke out in the middle of the street.
Debbie stood in the doorway to tell everyone to leave, that she had children in the house. Suddenly she was shot dead.
Police say Jones wasn't the intended target, just in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Detective Steve Zaccardi/Ogden Police Dept.: "WE BELIEVE THERE'S MORE THAN ONE SHOOTER OR THERE'S MORE THAN ONE PERSON THAT FIRED SHOTS THAT NIGHT."
Karen Scullin/Eyewitness News: "BUT NOW, ALMOST FOUR YEARS LATER, THE MYSTERY OF WHAT HAPPENED ON THIS STREET THAT NIGHT REMAINS UNSOLVED. AND WHAT'S REALLY FRUSTRATING FOR FAMILY MEMBERS AND POLICE IS THAT THERE WERE A LOT OF PEOPLE IN THE STREET THAT NIGHT WHO PROBABLY KNOW WHO SHOT AND KILLED DEBBIE JONES."
Detectives say there were anywhere from 20 to 100 people
in the street who were attending a party at this house. People from Ogden, Salt Lake City, and New York.
Investigators
are looking for two men who may now be living in New York, known only as Alize and Mellow.
Steve Zaccardi: "PEOPLE KNOW WHAT HAPPENED. SOMEBODY SAW WHAT HAPPENED."
Travis Martinez is raising Alex without his mother Debbie. But explaining where mom is to
a six-year-old boy isn't easy.
Travis hopes someone will come forward with information so he can tell Alex who's responsible,
and that he's paying the price for what he's done.
Travis Martinez: "HE WANTS HIS MOM. HE ASKS, YOU KNOW, WHY SHE'S IN
HEAVEN."
If you have any information on the case, even if you were simply attending the party but you didn't see anything, Detective Zaccardi would like you to call. The number is 801-629-8277. You can remain anonymous.
