Details of Accused Kidnapper

More details are emerging about Javier Sickler's past. While awaiting charges stemming from Monday's attack, he's already been charged for another horrible crime.

Crime Specialist Karen Scullin has details.

Prosecutors said today the violence inflicted on an 11-year-old girl is some of the worst they've ever seen.

But while they continue to investigate that crime, they fear that Sickler may have committed many more crimes that may never be uncovered.

A portrait of a monster is developing as we learn more and more about the man who police say kidnapped, possibly raped, and bludgeoned an 11-year-old girl Monday morning with a hammer.

Today Javier Sickler was charged with attempted murder, attempted rape of a child, child kidnapping, and child abuse.

Those close to the case say it's one of the worst cases of violence against a child they they've ever seen. David Yocom/Salt Lake County District Attorney: CERTAINLY TO US AND TO ALL OF LAW ENFORCEMENT, THE BEATING THAT THIS YOUNG GIRL TOOK, IT'S AMAZING THAT SHE SURVIVED.

But police say with this horrible crime came the realization by another rape victim, that Sickler had sexually assaulted her earlier this month. She recognized his photo on television.

For that crime he faces charges of aggravated kidnapping, two counts of rape, forcible sodomy, and two counts of forcible sexual abuse.

Karen Scullin/Eyewitness News: SICKLER WAS SUSPECTED, BUT NEVER CHARGED FOR A RAPE IN 1994. BUT BETWEEN 94 AND RIGHT NOW, SICKLER HAD NO KNOWN RUN-INS WITH THE LAW. BUT PROSECUTORS SAY THE IDEA THAT HE WASN'T OUT COMMITTING CRIMES, ESPECIALLY SEXUAL OFFENSES, IS UNLIKELY.

But prosecutors say any unsolved sexual offenses before 1999 will likely be hard to link--at least through D.N.A.-- to Sickler, because most states, including Utah, didn't have a D.N.A. database until around 1999. Even so, calls are pouring in from all around the nation.

Jason Norton/Midvale Police Dept.: I DO HAVE PHONE CALLS THAT I'M WAITING TO CALL BACK ON. I DO HAVE PHONE CALLS FROM FLORIDA, FROM OTHER STATES. SO AT THIS POINT IT'S GOING NOW AND TALKING TO THEM, SEEING WHAT KIND OF PROFILES THEY HAVE, SEEING IF THE M.O. IS THE SAME ON THEIR CASES.

Police are still waiting for results of a blood test to determine if Sickler was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

And they're waiting for further analysis from the hospital examination. At that point an actual rape charge may be filed in connection to the girl.
