Tip Leads To Meth Bust

March 16, 2000

Another small victory in the war on drugs! A tip led agents to a working drug lab inside a Salt Lake City home at about 7th West and 9th South. They found it despite the surveillance camera in the corner of the window.

A meth lab is a danger not only for those inside, but the entire neighborhood. That's why everyone has been encouraged to call the new hotline to report those you suspect are cooking meth.

Along with the drugs, agents found at least eight guns and some cash. Agents say most meth cooks are involved in a lot of criminal activity.

The Utah Council on Crime Prevention is glad to know the system works. If anyone calls in to report a lab, they'll be asked questions on why they think there might be a problem. But they can remain anonymous.

Tibby Milne/Ut. Council on Crime Prevention: THERE ARE SOME THAT WOULD SAY WE'RE TEACHING PEOPLE TO NARC, BUT WE'RE NOT ENCOURAGING ANYONE TO NARC. WE JUST WANT CLEAN NEIGHBORHOODS AND QUALITY LIFE FOR UTAH'S CHILDREN AND FAMILIES.

The suspects themselves told agents today a child wasn't there with them because he had wandered outside yesterday and got run over. He's in the hospital. That's just an example of why it's so important to call these things in.

The number to call if you suspect someone's cooking in your neighborhood is 1-800-972-2255.

Milne says in the first 24 hours the hotline was up and running they got 18 calls. Several investigations are ongoing.
