Utah's Biggest Marijuana Crop

Sept. 23, 1999

Two suspects are in custody for their part in the biggest marijuana operation ever found in Utah. It was discovered yesterday morning by a hiker in Ogden Canyon near the town of Liberty.

Police and drug agents spent the entire day taking down the 11 crops and more than 6,000 plants.

Crime Specialist Karen Scullin has the story.

A multi million dollar marijuana operation went up in smoke at sundown.

But to get to that point, it meant pulling up each and every three to twelve foot plant one by one.

The crops were well hidden deep within the trees and brush. It was a sophisticated operation.

In these types of cases, growers might get paid $1,000 for their efforts.

Landowners say at times, the growers were right under their noses, and they didn't know it.

But by the end of the day, the plants were all airlifted out of the canyon and burned, briefly turning the sunset a little grey, but putting an end to at least one major illegal operation going in Utah.
