Voluntary No Drive Days

The unrelenting heat is causing ozone levels to soar.

Tomorrow is another voluntary "No Drive" day when the D-E-Q asks us to spare the air, and reduce emissions from our cars and trucks.

It will be the 8th "No Drive" day of the year, and the forth in a row.

In recent years, the Division of Air Quality has urged people to get out of their cars..

This year, it hopes everyone will choose clean air in a variety of ways...especially if they must drive.

Here's what the Utah Department of Transportation numbers show for the summer of 2001.

On a normal day last summer...125-thousand cars cruised I-15.

On No Drive days UDOT counted 1500 to six thousand FEWER cars. That's a one-and-a-half to five percent reduction.

When there are consecutive no drive days...more motorists leave their cars at home as the streak grows...

Trax trains carry 28-thousand passengers each day...people who otherwise might drive.

We'll have plenty of days left this summer to make adjustments.
