Dec. 27, 2000--
A family in Orem is dealing with a double tragedy.
Last night a father and his six-year-old son were killed
as they tried to cross one of the city's busiest streets.
News Specialist John Daley has details.
An investigation into the cause of this accident is
continuing. But for now, police say it appears the
father and the son never saw the truck coming, and
the driver of the truck never saw them.
On the day after Christmas, a tragic combination of
circumstances for thirty-one-year-old Lloyd Marble
and his six-year-old son Casey.
They were crossing
State Street in Orem together on a bike about 8:00
p.m. under dark skies. The busy state road they were
on is dimly lit, and to make matters worse, police say
the overhead light there is out and there is no
crosswalk.
A tow truck barreled into them. The driver apparently
didn't hit the brakes until after Marble and his son had
been hit.
Lt. Ned Jackson/Orem Police Dept.:
"THE TOW TRUCK DRIVER WAS UNDER THE
SPEED LIMIT OR CLOSE TO THE SPEED
LIMIT BUT NOT OVER. JUST DOESN'T
LOOK LIKE HE EVER HAD THE CHANCE.
BY THE TIME HE COULD SEE HIM, THERE
JUST WASN'T TIME TO STOP AND AVOID
THE ACCIDENT."
Police say Marble's wife and their other children,
traveling home after shopping, came upon the accident
just after it happened.
Lt. Ned Jackson/Orem Police Dept.:
"REALLY TRAGIC TO HAPPEN THE DAY
AFTER CHRISTMAS. UH, IT'S GONNA BE
SOMETHING. YOU KNOW, CHRISTMAS IS A
HAPPY TIME AND YET TO ASSOCIATE
THIS WITH A DEATH OF A HUSBAND AND
SON, OR A FATHER AND BROTHER, IT'S
GOING TO BE DIFFICULT."
A neighbor tells Eyewitness News Lloyd Marble had
a reputation as being very safety conscious with
reflectors.
Jessica Darrington/Neighbor: "IT
WAS A SHOCK. A COMPLETE SHOCK. I
MEAN, THE DAY AFTER CHRISTMAS.
ESPECIALLY SO MUCH A SHOCK BECAUSE
LLOYD HAS ALWAYS BEEN A SAFETY
FANATIC."
Lloyd Marble is survived by a wife and three
daughters age 8, 4 and 2. A trust fund is being set up
to help with funeral arrangement in the names of Lloyd
and Casey Marble, through Key Bank.
Meantime, police are still trying to figure out exactly
what happened. Anyone with any information is asked
to call Orem police.
