Words To The Song
Oct. 17, 2000
The University of Utah marching band will make a little music history at this Saturday's football game, by performing a new school fight song.
Arts Specialist Carole Mikita got a preview.
It's quite lively, as you might imagine.
But many of you are already asking, will it replace "Utah Man?" Definitely not. This song, says the composer, is the creation of a new tradition to add to the old.
Years in the planning, now it's a reality. It's titled simply "Utah Fight Song."
So, who do you get to create such a thing? In this case, U. grad and Tabernacle organist emeritus Robert Cundick.
Robert Cundick, Composer "Utah Fight Song": "WHEN YOU'RE DEALING WITH A FIGHT SONG, YOU CAN'T SAY VERY MUCH MORE THAN, 'GET OUT THERE AND STOMP ON 'EM AND WIN THIS GAME.' AND THE OTHER THING THAT WAS VERY IMPORTANT WAS, THAT I FELT STRONGLY THAT WE HAVE A SONG THAT WAS EQUALLY ADDRESSED TO WOMEN, AS WELL AS MEN."
In that, it is perhaps unique in its genre. But, this one, he wants understood will never replace the old favorite "Utah Man." Both will be sung at games.
And should you want to familiarize yourself with the music and lyrics before the game, you can find them in the new U. of U. Songbook, sold at the bookstore.
And one of the reasons for this whole thing...
Robert Cundick, Composer "Utah Fight Song": "WELL, TO BE PERFECTLY MERCENARY ABOUT IT, WHAT I HOPE IS THAT WE GET NEEDED SCHOLARSHIP MONEY FOR THE U. MUSIC DEPARTMENT."
And he's hoping this fight song will take its place with those of universities from coast to coast, a way to honor both the past and the future.
The Utah Fight Song premieres this Saturday at halftime of the U. of U. - Colorado State game.
