Holiday Shopping Stress

A new study on stress and shopping shows some men get an adreneline rush that's like being in battle. To test that theory, we followed some soldiers shopping at the Pentagon City Mall.

" It's kind of like war in that you have to go in with a good plan. You should know what you're going to do ahead of time," explains one shopper. Holiday shopping add to the pressure of finding the perfect gift. " You're trying to make you know family and friends happy but that can never be accomplished."

The British study followed three dozen men and women buying items from the same shopping list while fighting crowds, finding gifts, and waiting to check out. During the shopping and afterwards, they took the blood pressure of all the participants and here's what they found: Every single one of the men had a considerably higher blood pressure and heart rate. But of the women, only one in four showed any significant increase.

One shopper says, "I only find shopping stressful when I'm with my wife." But the person under the most pressure to please-- Santa-- doesn't seem to view the strain. "Sometimes it gets busy but I just love listening to the children and hearing their wishes, trying to make it a happy time of year for everyone," says St. Nick.

The study suggests women like to browse before buying. Men know what they're looking for and then look for the exit.
