The Incident-- John Hollenhorst reporting (4/28)
"THIS DOESN'T HAPPEN. THIS DOESN'T HAPPEN HERE, IN A RESTAURANT. IT JUST DOESN'T HAPPEN."
Clusters of spring flowers left this morning, the day after a night of violence and terror.
A man who may have been high on drugs sprayed gunfire in an upscale suburban neighbhorhood.
One man is killed in his place of work -- another is shot dead in front of his 12-year-old daughter.
This morning, police arrest the suspect, and an entire community tries to undersand, "WHY?"
The incident didn't begin or end here, at Chevy's Restaurant in the Fort Union area. But this restaurant was at the heart of the tragic story. In a few moments of confusion and terror, four restaurant employees and customers were gunned down for no apparent reason.
This is one of those stories that cries out for an explanation... a motive for so much bloodshed.
But so far, we haven't heard one that explains any of it.
It began at a hotel in Sandy, with a shot and a scream in a third floor guest room. Many guests were terrorized, and shaken to the core.
Ruth Anderton/Hotel resident: "PEOPLE JUST RUNNING AWAY. RUNNING SCARED."
Police now believe 21-year old Quinn Martinez shot his girlfriend in that room as they argued over the use of her car. She showed up at a hospital a few hours later with a leg wound.
From the hotel, Martinez allegedly ran north and into Chevy's restaurant. Terrorized witnesses say he appeared intoxicated and pointed a gun at the manager.
Miguel Deltoro/Restaurant Worker: "HE HAD THE GUN TO HIS HEAD AND HE WAS LIKE, 'GIVE ME THE PHONE! 'GIVE ME THE PHONE! I NEED A PHONE,' AND I WAS LOOKING AND MY MANGER STOOD UP. I HEARD A SHOT, AND I RAN TO THE KITHCEN."
The manager was killed. The gunman shot and wounded a second employee, then ran outside and demanded car keys from a customer.
Kevin Thacker/Sandy City Police: "WHEN HE CONFRONTED HIM, THE GUY JUST SHOT HIM."
The man fell dead in front of his 12-year old daughter. The gunmen tried to hijack another car, shooting the woman driver in the face.
Incredibly, the wounded woman drove away with her daughter, to a nearby Maverik store.
A customer there rendered first aid after encountering the victims in front of the store.
Ryan Gibbons/Store Customer: "I SAW THAT THE WINDOW TO THEIR TAHOE WAS SHATTERED AND HER MOTHER WAS STANDING THERE WITH TWO BULLET HOLES IN HER FACE."
The trail of tragedy climaxed hours later when the suspect was arrested hiding in a freind's house a short distance away.
The Victims-- Jed Boal reporting (4/28)
The victims of the bloody rampage:
- Jamie Lucero, shot at the hotel, was treated and released.
- Carjack victim 44-year old Debbie Briggs is in serious condition.
- 22-year old Chevy's employee Josh Parker is in stable condition.
- 43-year-old Peter Berg of Mountain Green, was killed in the parking lot.
- 33-year old Jason Rasmussen of Salt Lake City is the fatally wounded restaurant manager.
The shooting hit hard among the employes at Chevy's Resturant, and in
the tightly-knit Weber County community of Mountain Green.
Chevy's is closed tonight out of respect for the victims.
On a normal Friday night the parking lot would be bustling.
Tonight, the front door is a make-shift memorial.
The shooting at Chevy's shook up many people's sense of safety.
Yet, many of them remembered the victims and brought flowers.
Susan Brown of Sandy arrived with flowers to show her sympathy for the victims and their families.
She says she now knows this kind of violence CAN affect her community.
Susan Brown/Sandy Resident: IT HAPPENS ANYWHERE, BUT, WHEN IT HAPPENS HERE YOU WANT TO EXPRESS SOMETHING.
John Winder, who serves on the city's Public Safety Committee, says it's distressing...especially when the community is working to curb violent crime.
John Winder/Sandy City Council Member: IT'S A VERY TRAGIC SITUATION AND WE'RE DEEPLY CONCERNED ABOUT IT HAPPENING IN OUR COMMUNITY.
Employees were filled with disbelief.
Not knowing whether they'd work, they showed up to find out what was going on.
Jason Rasmussen was shot right in the restaurant when the gunman demanded a phone.
Pam Boyd/Chevy's Server: IF YOU NEEDED HELP, ALL YOU HAD TO DO WAS ASK. WE HUNG OUT TOGETHER...THIS IS UNREAL.
The man who died at the side of a car will be missed up in Weber Canyon.
The close community of Mountain Green is trying to come to grips with the death of Peter Berg.
Andre Malan/Berg's Friend: HE WAS ALWAYS THERE TO HELP...WILL BE MISSED ESPECIALLY BY HIS FAMILY.
Friends say Berg was with his wife and two children, celebrating his son's birthday at the restaurant.
Right after he told the shooter to take his car, Berg was gunned down in front of his 12-year-old daughter.
HE CARED MORE ABOUT OTHERS THAN HIMSELF. THAT WAS THE HALLMARK OF HIS LIFE.
That family friend says the 12-year-old is already seeing a counselor.
The restaurant plans to re-open for business Saturday, and has counseling available for its employees.
The community will also make counselors available Monday.
The Suspect-- Angela An reporting (4/28)
The man accused in those murders is 21-year-old Quinn Robert Martinez.
He surrendered to police this morning, after SWAT teams surrounded a home where he was hiding, just a few blocks from where the shootings took place.
Martinez is facing several charges including two counts of homicide.
Eyewitness News looked into his past and discovered a criminal history that dates back to when Quinn Martinez was just 13 years old.
From the house where he was hiding...
"THEY WERE ABLE TO MAKE CONTACT WITH HIM AND NEGOTIATED WITH HIM COMING OUT ON HIS OWN."
To the hospital where doctors treated his apparent suicide-attempt...
Sgt. Kevin Thacker/Sandy Police: "THE INJURIES ON HIS WRIST WERE APPARENTLY SELF-INFLICTED EARLIER THIS MORNING."
21-year-old Quinn Robert Martinez apppeared somber as he entered the Sandy Police department, handcuffed and accused of a shooting rampage that left two dead.
Connie Lucero: "I'M VERY UPSET ABOUT IT."
Connie Lucero is the mother of Jaime,
the first victim, shot in the leg at the hotel near Chevy's Restaurant.
Connie Lucero/Mother of Shooting Victim: "FROM WHAT MY DAUGHTER SAID, HE WAS INTOXICATED AND ON METH, 'CAUSE I ASKED HER."
Police have not been able to confirm if Martinez was on drugs. He requested an attorney immediately after his arrest.
But today is not Martinez's first encounter with the law.
"WEAPONS OFFENSES, HE'S GOT STOLEN VEHICLES, SOME BURGLARIES, THINGS LIKE THAT."
Police records also show Martinez committed many crimes-- some violent-- as a juvenile.
At the time of his capture, police had two warrants out for his arrest.
Scott Swofford is a family friend, and gave this statement:
Scott Swofford/Martinez Family Friend: "CERTAINLY AS ALL PARENTS DO, THEY CONTINUE TO LOVE THEIR SON. AND WOULD HOPE TO SUPPORT HIM."
Martinez's parents acknowledge their son has had a troubled past, but they say he's never hurt anyone before.
Police say that all changed last night.
