Larry King Live

They began grabbing headlines more than a year ago when they got married. Now Larry and Shawn King are a much-sought-after "Hollywood" - Washington couple. News Specialist Carole Mikita got the interview. As Carole reports, she found them to be relaxed, friendly, and very candid about their relationship.

They say it was like a scene from a movie-- in front of Tiffany's in New York City. They literally bumped into each other.

Kings: "I GRUNTED. I WAS GRUNTING AND I WAS WALKING. IT WAS AN ACKNOWLEDGING GRUNT. SOMETIMES WHEN I WALK, I GRUNT AND... IT HAPPENS AND I WENT AROUND AND WE BUMPED INTO EACH OTHER AGAIN. AND I SAID SOMETHING CUTE LIKE, 'IF THIS KEEPS UP, WE'RE GONNA BE IN THE TABLOIDS' AND TWO MONTHS LATER... WE WERE (THEY LAUGH)."

Now married more than a year and, they say, incredibly happy.

Larry King: "WHENEVER I THINK OF SHAWN, I THINK OF A SMILE. SHE ALMOST ALWAYS SMILES. YOU KNOW THE DRAWING WHERE 'HAVE A HAPPY DAY'? SHE MADE A FORTUNE FROM THAT. THAT'S HER."

Shawn King: "LARRY HAS A VERY TENDER HEART. HE IS SO LOVING AND SO KIND AND HE CARES SO MUCH ABOUT THE PEOPLE AROUND HIM."

Larry says his bride's Mormon religion was a whole new thing for him. Before his televised interview with L.D.S. Church President Gordon B. Hinckley, Larry and Shawn met privately with the president in his Salt Lake office.

Shawn King: "TO SEE MY HUSBAND AND THE LEADER OF OUR CHURCH SITTING, TALKING ONE-ON-ONE-- IT WAS HUGE TO ME. Larry King: "AND THAT MADE ME LOVE HER MORE TO LOOK AT THAT...YOU KNOW."

When I asked them about their goals for this marriage, the Kings said having a family.

Larry King: "IF THERE ARE CHILDREN, WE WOULD RAISE THEM IN THE MORMON FAITH, ONE, BECAUSE SHE IS MUCH MORE DEVOUT THAT I AM IN THE JEWISH FAITH. SO THAT WOULD BE UNFAIR. AND TWO, BECAUSE OF OUR AGE DIFFERENCE, I'M 26 YEARS OLDER-- THE CHILD SHOULD BE BROUGHT UP IN A FAITH WHERE THE PARENT IS GONNA BE AROUND WHEN THEY GET UP INTO SPECIAL AGES."

When we caught up with them in Provo, visiting Shawn's 18-year-old son, they confirmed their baby will be arriving about April 1st.

Shawn King: "WE DID NOT THINK THAT THERE WAS A BABY ON THE WAY. HE HAD A DOCTOR'S APPOINTMENT AND SAID, 'WHY DON'T YOU JUST COME WITH ME AND YOU CAN HAVE A CHECK UP, TOO?' AND I DID, AND WHADDA YA KNOW!? THE DOCTOR SAID 'GUESS WHAT?"

Larry King: "AS I THOUGHT THE OTHER DAY-- I AM GONNA BE THE FIRST MEDICARE FATHER. I THINK MEDICARE PAYS FOR THIS BIRTH."

Their other goal now is to simplify their lifestyle. They say they travel too much. That's the bad part. The good part? For Shawn, meeting all those stars and politicians her husband interviews. Their favorite is Colin Powell. Every New Year's Eve, Larry and Colin dance with each other at the stroke of midnight.

Larry King: "I SAID, 'ISN'T THIS GREAT. IN AMERICA, A JEWISH GUY AND A BLACK GUY, DANCING ON NEW YEAR'S EVE?' AND HE JUMPED BACK AND YELLED,'YOU'RE JEWISH?'"

Laughter, Larry and Shawn say, is the glue that keeps them together.

"YOU MAKE ME LAUGH, DEFINITELY. WELL, YOU'RE NO SNOKE IN THE POKE, EITHER. YOU'RE A FUNNY PERSON. SNOKE IN THE POKE?(BIG LAUGH) I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHAT THAT IS."

Larry also told me he recently signed a new contract with CNN and hopes to do more shows from the Los Angeles bureau. He and Shawn like being close to her family, the Engemanns, in Provo.
