Window Blinds Recalled

Nov. 1, 2000

Millions of horizontal blinds are being recalled for repairs that should help prevent the risk of strangulation to young children.

Since 1991, the Consumer Product Safety Commission has received 130 reports of children being stragled from the cords on window blinds.

In 1995, manufacturers stopped selling blinds with pull cords that end in loops.

Today's recall comes after an investigation last year, that showed children can still get caught in the inner cords that are used to raise the slats of the blinds.

Now blinds are being designed with a mechanism that prevents the inner cords from forming a loop if pulled by children.

If you have window blinds with cords, you can call the Window Covering Safety Council toll free for a free repair kit. The number is 1-800-506-4636.
