Bassinet

WASHINGTON (AP) _ Fisher-Price is recalling about 569,000 portable bassinets because their folding frames can injure the fingers of children and adults.

The company, based in East Aurora, N.Y., has received 24 reports of fingers getting caught or pinched in the frames, including 10 children with cuts and one with a broken finger.

The recalled bassinets convert to infant seats with vibrating units and are supported by white folding frames. They were sold under the names Sit and Soothe Portable Bassinet, Soothing Sounds Bassinet and Soothing Sounds Portable Bassinet.

The bassinets are covered in blue-and-white fabric with stars, swirls and hearts. "Fisher-Price" is molded into the white plastic sides of the vibrating unit.

"Fisher-Price" and model number 79338, 79334 or 79336 appear on a white label under the bassinet's foot. Only bassinets manufactured before April 2000 are included in the recall.

Stores nationwide sold these bassinets from November 1997 through March 2001 for about $50.

The safety commission on Monday advised consumers to stop using these portable bassinets immediately and contact Fisher-Price toll-free at 1-800-285-0324 to order a free repair kit that prevents the frame from folding.

Burger King Toy

Burger King is facing another toy recall.

It's calling back about two and a-half million toddler toys, because they can break open. And when that happens, small beads are released, and children could choke on them.

The toys are the "Hourglass Space Sprout" and the "Look for Me Bumblebee."

The fast-food chain says there haven't been any injuries associated with the toys, but it didn't want to take any chances.

In March, 400,000 "Rattling, Paddling Riverboat" toys were recalled because of a choking hazard.

Safety Latches

Safety 1st is voluntarily recalling about 1.7 million packages of safety latches used to prevent children from opening cabinets and drawers.

If the safety latch breaks, a small spring could be released. Young children could choke on the small spring or get into a cabinet or drawer where dangerous items are stored.

So far, 27 incidents of these latches breaking have been reported. There have been two injuries. A 13-month-old girl placed the broken spring from one of these latches in her mouth and suffered a minor abrasion inside her mouth. Also, a 2-year-old girl was able to open a cabinet protected by a safety latch, gained access to a bathroom cabinet and sprayed tile cleaner into her mouth. She received chemical burns to her throat.

The latches are made of white plastic with a spring which holds the latch closed. "SAFETY 1 st" is written on the top of the latches.

Their packaging reads, in part, "SAFETY 1ST" and "CABINET & DRAWER SPRING LATCHES." They were sold in a package of three or four latches. The straight ends of the metal springs are uncovered on the recalled latches. The replacement latches have a plastic tab over the short, straight end of the metal spring.

The springs are uncovered on the recalled latches. The replacement latches have a plastic tab over the spring.

Toy, hardware and department stores nationwide sold the set of three or four latches from January 1993 through December 1999 for about $7.

Consumers should contact Safety 1st for free replacement latches immediately. For more information, call Safety 1st at (800) 366-1282 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, or go to he firm's web site at www.safety1st.com.

Child Safety Seats

A warning for parents about thousands of child safety seats.

Peg Perego USA is recalling over 14,000 infant car seats.

There have been no reports on any injuries so far.

The seats were sold separately with a base as the Primo Viaggio infant seat. They were also bundled with a stroller and sold as the Pliko Travel System or Primo Viaggio Travel System.

Consumers can get instructions on how to repair the seats from Peg Perego of Fort Wayne, Indiana.
