Leavitt May Face Tough Challenge
In Primary

Poll Details

May 30, 2000

Will Governor Leavitt face a tough challenge in next month's Republican Primary?

That would appear to be a possibility based on the latest KSL-TV Deseret News poll conducted by Dan Jones & Associates.

News Specialist John Daley joins us now with details.

Very popular, but potentially vulerable. That might be the best way to sum up the Governor's position based on this latest poll.

75% of those polled say they approve of the job Governor Mike Leavitt is doing. Those polled were also asked about whether they'd vote for the incumbent Governor or his challenger--businessman Glen Davis.

A solid majority, 57%, say if the vote were held today they'd vote for Leavitt.

But for a relative newcomer who is by no means a household name, Glen Davis fares surprisingly well, getting 24%.

16 percent are undecided.

Pollster Dan Jones calls this the most interesting primary in Utah politics in years, and says turnout is the key.

Jones says often a June primary means a low turnout, and that a low turnout favors Glen Davis. Jones says Davis can count on solid support from conservative Republicans like those who booed the Govenor at the recent party convention.

Jones says issues that seem to be important to voters include gun control, education and land use.

He says one wild card is the Olympic bribery scandal. If there are indictments in the case before the primary, that could help the challenger, Glen Davis.
