One of the most respected members of the Utah
business Community has been charged in the Salt
Lake Olympics bribery scandal.
David E. Simmons pleaded guilty to criminal tax
violation in connection with a scheme that gave the son
of an International Olympic Committee member a
high- paying job here in Salt Lake City. News
Specialist John Daley has details.
Since last December the Justice Department has been
investigating the Salt Lake Olympic bribery scandal.
Today, the first criminal charge, made against a
prominent Salt Lake business man.
Salt Lake City businessman David Simmons agreed
today to plead guilty to a misdemeanor tax violation,
the Justice Department announced this morning.
Simmons is the former CEO of Keystone
Communications.
The department said the plea stemmed from a scheme
in which Simmons helped Jung Hoon Kim, the son of
an International Olympic Committee member obtain
lawful permanent resident status here in the U.S.--by
offering the son a fraudulent job at his company, the
government said.
Kim's father had a vote on which city would get the
2002 Winter Olympics. A plea agreement was filed in
U.S. District Court in Salt Lake City today, and
Simmons appeared before a U.S. Magistrate Judge.
Justice officials say their investigation is continuing--so
we're likely to hear more in the coming days and
weeks.
