Mitt Romney Biography
W. Mitt Romney is the founder and CEO of Bain Capital, Inc., a
private holding company with portfolio company revenues in excess of
$13-billion. Organized in 1984, Bain Capital has acquired or started over 120
companies including Staples, Domino's Pizza, Brookstone, Totes, FTD Florists
and The Sealy Corporation.
A recognized leader in the investment management industry, Bain Capital's
$3.8-billion capital under management includes private equity, high yield
assets, mezzanine debt, and public equities.
From 1978 to 1984, Mr. Romney was a Vice President of Bain & Company Inc., the
international management consulting firm. In 1990, he returned to the company
as its CEO to lead its highly successful turnaround. Today, Bain & Company has
25 offices worldwide and over 2,000 employees.
Mr. Romney is a director of Marriott International, Staples, Inc., The Sports
Authority, and LifeLike Corporation. He serves on the national boards of The
Points of Light Foundation, The Boy Scouts of America, City Year, and The
Brigham Young University School of Management.
In 1994, Mr. Romney was the Massachusetts Republican nominee for United States
Senate, and ran against Senator Ted Kennedy.
Mr. Romney received his B.A. with Highest Honors from Brigham Young University
in 1971. In 1975 he was awarded an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School and was
named a Baker Scholar. In 1975, he also received his Juris Doctorate, cum
laude, from Harvard Law School.
He and his wife, Ann, have been married
nearly 30 years and have five children. He grew up in Michigan, and lives in
Belmont, Mass., and has a residence in Park City,
Utah. His full name is Willard Mitt Romney, with his
first name from J. Willard Marriott, Sr., a close friend
of the Romney family, and his middle name from an
uncle.
