    • On February 11, the SLOC Board of Trustees unanimously approved businessman Mitt Romney as the new C.E.O. of the Organizing Committee.

Romney called it a priviledge to work on the Olympic games for 2002. He said he sees the Olympics as a symbol of peace, and a showcase for heroes, and he doesn't want what has happened to dampen the Olympic spirit.

Some of his absolutes included making sure the games and preparations will be at highest level of ethical conduct. He also promised to spend no more money on the games than they take in, saying the taxpayers shouldn't have to pay the bill. He also mentioned protecting the Utah environment, and allowing Utahns to share the thrill of Olympic games.

His goals are to put on the best winter olympics ever and make Utah proud. Romney said the Olympics are about sport, not business, and although managers messed up big time, the athletes haven't.

Romney, 51, is a Republican who unsuccessfully challenged Sen. Ted Kennedy in 1994. He is the son of the late George Romney, governor of Michigan.

He lives in Belmont, Mass., and also has a home in Park City, Utah. He graduated from Brigham Young University, and has been an L.D.S. Church bishop and stake president in Massachusetts.

Romney's Boston company, Bain Capital Inc., specializes in buying companies and turning them around. Domino's was a recent acquisition.
