First Online Sponsor

Jan. 18, 2000

Here's another sign of growing influence of the internet: The Salt Lake Organizing Committee announced a new Olympic sponsor today. And it's an online company. News Specialist John Daley has the story.

Monster.com has become Sponsor.com. And top Olympic boss Mitt Romney calls it the first virtual announcement in Olympic history.

Monster.com will become an Olympic sponsor, providing the Salt Lake Organizing Committee with online career management services, to find permanent employees and volunteers for the games.

Romney says the deal is an enormous boost because it'll bring in somewhere around $20 million, most of it cash.

SLOC is looking for 26,000 volunteers beginning in March of this year for the 2002 Games. The organization is also expanding its staff to 750 employees by the time the games arrive.

Romney says this deal happened very quickly--it took just about six weeks from the first conversations to signing the deal. And he says the SLOC hopes to sign up other "dot coms" in the coming months.
