FBI Expands Investigation

(2/20/99)

The FBI has expanded its investigation into Salt Lake City's bid for the 2002 Olympics, to include the personal financial dealings of bid leader, Tom Welch.

The Washington Post reports federal investigators are examining whether Tom Welch forged his ex-wife's name on a letter authorizing the transfer in 1991 of $30,000 from their children's trust funds to an account belonging to the wife of an IOC member from Western Samoa.

The FBI is also investigating the use of a joint bank account of which there are allegations Mrs. Welch's signature was forged. Investigators are trying to determine if federal bribery or fraud statues were violated.
