MURRAY, Utah (AP) _ The Environmental Protection Agency has delayed plans to demolish Murray's landmark smokestacks until at least July.
Donald Robbins, director of environmental services for the American Smelting and Refining Co. _ one of two former owners, told the City Council meeting that the EPA had ordered a work stoppage.
It is the fourth time the stack demolition has been delayed since it was originally scheduled for April 30. No new date has been set.
Experts plan to knock the 455-foot and 300-foot stacks into two water-filled trenches to make way for the proposed Chimney Ridge commercial development.
In recent weeks, Robbins said, the EPA has added extra measures to contain dust from the blast, monitor the affects of the demolition on air quality and change the direction the taller tower will fall.
The destruction can't continue until the revised work plan is approved.
