August 12, 2002

Two people are dead after being shot and killed by police.

Members of a SWAT team were serving a warrant....unnanounced... when they reportedly felt their lives were in danger and fired.

Crime Specialist Karen Scullin joins us now with details. Karen?

Although it appears only one of the two were armed with a gun.... the police chief says his officers responded just as they were trained ...with deadly force.

The word on the street was that Scott Biswell "wouldn't be taken alive."

And when police found him last night inside a room at the Amenity Inn in Provo, they say he raised a gun and pointed it at officers.

Chief Craig Geslison/ Provo Police Dept.: THE OFFICERS THEN RESPONDED TO THE THREAT BY OPENING FIRE ONT HE SUSPECTS

Biswell and his girlfriend, Kortni Grimm were killed.

The two were in bed when police barged in...but only Biswell pointed a gun at officers. Grimm was killed by shots aimed at Biswell.

Chief Geslison: DUE TO THE CRIMINAL HISTORY OF THE SUSPECTS INVOLVED, WE FELT THAT IT WAS BEST THAT WE GO IN UNANNOUNCED, AS THEY DID

Biswell was wanted for an incident in West Valley City. On August 4th... police say he became abusive to two women and a baby during an altercation over a parking problem. He waved a gun at them, smashed out a window to their car, and then backed into it to move it out of the way.

His criminal history goes back to 1989 and includes fleeing from police, robbery, assault, and theft.

Grimm's criminal record includes drug posession, theft, and forgery.

Biswell was a member of the Soldiers of Aryan Culture....one of four White Supremacist Gangs at the Utah State Prison. But like many members...Biswell was out on parole.

The gang members are known to be violent and lately criminal activity among white supremacist gangs seems to be increasing in the community.

The officers who fired are on administrative duty pending the outcome of the investigation by the Utah county Attorney's Office. But the Chief of Police indicated today, his officers followed procedure and acted in self defense.
