Five Utah Spots Ranked Most Beautiful in Nation
An outdoor magazine published by National Geographic lists the 50 most "perfect places," and five of them are in Utah.

News Specialist Keith McCord reporting

An outdoor magazine published by National Geographic lists the 50 most "perfect places," and five of them are in Utah.

Utah's beautiful scenery certainly received it's fair share of exposure in the past couple of years, with all the media coverage before, during and after the Olympics.

50 Perfect Places

And here's some more -- in the November issue of National Geographic's "Adventure" Magazine.

"This is the Rectory. It's near Moab and Canyonlands. It's a beautiful precipice as you can see ... very, very beautiful place," says Kent Hansen with the Utah Travel Council.

And it's right on the cover of the magazine.

The Rectory is one of the 50 places in the country that outdoor enthusiasts have ranked as "perfect" places to visit.

"What they did was, they went to professional writers, photographers, these are all outdoor specialists, tour guides, outfitters. They said 'what's your perfect place in the United States?'" Hansen says.

The other four spots in Utah are:

The Maze in Canyonlands National Park. The writer who chose this location wrote: "Just knowing that if you were to fall down in a slot canyon, it would be months before anyone found you, and that's scary, but part of the mystique and beauty of the place."

A photographer voted for the vista at Muley Point.

  • A river guide likes the characteristics of the San Juan River.

And of course, Monument Valley makes the list.

"In fact, the writer who talked about that one is from Belgium, and he talked about growing up watching John Wayne movies. He was very excited to come over and actually be there. He said it was like being in a world that he never dreamed he ever could," Hansen says.

What makes this magazine article a bit more special is that it came as a complete surprise to Utah tourism officials. The five locations that were featured, however, were not a surprise.

"I guess if there was anything that we would want to tell people beyond what's here, if you like this, there's a lot more where that came from," Hansen says.

The interesting thing about this article, of the 50 places that were chosen by all those writers and photographers, most of the places were in the west, namely, Utah, Colorado, Montana and California.
