News Specialist Debbie Dujanovic reporting.
Oh baby,
so many babies, surrounded by books.
Books to read ...
books to share ...
books to eat.
Welcome to Book Babies -- a free class held at libraries all
over Salt Lake City.
For the
shy,
"He
likes it. It just takes him a while to warm up," says
mom Holly Evans.
The sleepy,
"He was awake, I promise."
It's free,
fun, and friendly. Thirty minutes of silly songs --
(children sing "now pretend you're going to sneeze").
Followed
by a childhood favorite -- Jack Jumped Over the Candlestick.
Topped
off with a good book -- Some cars Keep Things From the Rain.
Listening,
by the way, is not required.
"It's
never too early to start exposing children to books,"
says associate librarian Lisa Grant.
That's the real goal of Book Babies. The bottom line -- binky
and all -- is that this teaches kids that books are fun. And,
you can bring the bottle and the binky. If the attention span
gets left at home, that's OK.
In fact,
we spotted a lot of little ones, well, distracted.
"If their kids are happier checking out the lint in the
corner, that's OK. They don't have to sit and be quiet,"
Grant says.
Quiet, this is not. Crazy, maybe. But mom's don't seem to
mind.
"I
think it's good for us. There's other moms to kick it with,"
says Johanna Salter.
The Book Babies program is in its sixth year at Salt Lake
City Libraries. It doesn't cost a dime, and, don't cry ...
There are lots of classes left -- baby.
