Aid to Kosovo

The striking images of death and suffering among refugees from Kosovo have caused Utahns to come forward with offers to help.

News Specialist Stacey Butler has been following several relief efforts.

At the Utah chapter of the American Red Cross, the phones are ringing off the hook.

Tanya Frisby says, "We've been getting a lot of calls. They've been asking what they can do to help Kosovo victims."

Terra Sherwood tells callers, "You just need to send a check to p.o. box 3836--just mark that you would like it to go to the Kosovo effort."

A man from Bountiful walked in here this morning wrote a check for $1,000 and asked that the money be used for the relief effort."

The Red Cross is asking for donations by cash or check only. They send the money to Red Cross volunteers in Kosovo who buy only what the refugees need.

Jerriane Kirby explains, "We try to help the economy and the disaster effected areas so that country can keep maintaining even after a situation is over."

As new pledges of help came in, thousands of pounds of supplies were shipped out from Salt Lake City today.

The LDS Church sent clothes, blankets and hygiene kits. The supplies were loaded into trucks, and will arrive in Kosovo by ship in a month.

Catholic Relief Services is also staffing a relief effort through it's headquarters in Maryland, which has sent $600,000 to Albanian refugees.

In Salt Lake, Catholic services is taking donations for Kosovo in cash form only.
