Freeway Connection Opens

This is a news release from the Utah Department of Transportation.

"A significant freeway-to-freeway connection will be restored Monday (7/17) when a new bridge linking I-80 eastbound with I-15 northbound opens just in time for the afternoon commute.

The one-lane bridge will officially open at 4 p.m. At the same time, I-80 eastbound from the airport area near I-215 to I-15, which has been closed since 1997, will be reopened with one lane to the new nortbound I-15 connection. Motorists will be able to access eastbound I-80 from the airport, I-215 and Redwood Road.

'This is just the first of several freeway-to-freeway connections that will be completed during the next few months,' said I-15 Reconstruction Project Director John Bourne. 'Together with the re-opening of the 5300 South interchange and the on-ramps at 1300 South, we believe we are providing some meaningful alternatives to motorists looking for ways to move east and west across the valley following the recent closure of SR-201.'

In September, a second I-80 eastbound route will be opened: the bridge providing access to the downtown area via 600 South. That same month, the 9000 South interchange will be re-opened.

'In October, the entire south end of the project--from the south junction of I-15 and I-215 to 10600 South--will be done,' Bourne said. 'With less than a year until all lanes, ramps, and connections are open, we really are seeing the light at the end of the reconstruction tunnel.'"
