Utah Census Facts

About 117,000 Utah households completed the Census long form in April 2000. Sent to one in six households nationwide, the form asks 53 questions on everything from ancestry to plumbing. Here are some highlights from Utah data released Tuesday:

SMARTY PANTS: The Mount Olympus area of Salt Lake County has the highest percent of people with graduate or professional degrees, at 30.9 percent of the population 25 and older. The state average is 8.3 percent.

SPLITSVILLE: The Piute Reservation has the highest percentage of divorced people. One-quarter of the population that's 15 and older has been divorced. On the flip side: The two Goshute reservation, in Skull Valley and on the Nevada border, have no divorced people. The state average is 8.1 percent.

STAYING PUT: Not many folks in Laketown, a tiny settlement at the south end of Bear Lake, have moved there lately. Ninety-three percent of the population has been in the same house since 1995. Dugway, with its transient military population, has the lowest percentage, at 15.3 percent. The state average is about 49 percent.

BLIMEY!: Twenty-nine percent of the Utah residents who filled out the census long form said they were primarily from English stock. The most English community? Rocky Ridge, in Juab County, at 94 percent.

SHARE THE RIDE: The tiny Lake Powell community of Halls Crossing has the distinction of having the highest percentage of people who car pool, at 50 percent. The state average is 14.1 percent.

SWELLSVILLE: Alta and Park City have the highest proportion of households with incomes of more than $200,000 a year, at 15.5 percent. The Granite area of Salt Lake County, near the mouth of Little Cottonwood Canyon, has the highest median household income, at $108,343. The Halchita area of San Juan County had the lowest median household income, at $9,875.

MAKING THE RENT: The average rent in Utah was $597; the Mount Olympus neighborhood in Salt Lake County had the highest, at $1,383 a month. Bluff, White Mesa and the Ute Reservation have the lowest rents, at $99 a month.
