FTC Tackles Health Info on Internet

Go To FTC Health Finder Web Site

June 24, 1999

The federal trade commission is raising the red flag on health information on the internet.

As of December 1988, 22-million people have turned to the net looking for medical information and advice.

Now, the F.T.C. is warning consumers to watch out for internet sites selling miracle cures for diseases like cancer, arthritis or AIDS.

The F.T.C. has already charged four companies with false claims and it's found 800 websites containing questionable information.

The government has set up a website that serves as a gateway to other sites it says are reliable. You can find that at www.healthfinder.gov.
