Fire Danger No Impact On Fireworks Sales

More Information

June 29, 2000

Across the Salt Lake Valley, 4th of July fireworks are already ringing out and already setting off grass fires.

News Specialist Nadine Wimmer reports dry, dangerous fire conditions haven't slowed down fireworks sales.

One stand and many like it across the valley, sit near boundaries where fireworks are completely off-limits.

Just up the street for instance, people can buy the fireworks and take them home, but it's illegal to set them off.

Kid: "ANYTHING THAT'LL REALLY POP OR SPLATTER."

Another Kid: "I'M ALSO LOOKING FOR THE KIND THAT POP, 'CAUSE THAT WOULD BE FUNNER."

Another Kid: "I LIKE THE FOUNTAIN ONES."

Another Kid: "I DON'T HAVE ANY MONEY, I'M JUST HERE WITH MY BROTHER."

Well, almost everyone is stocking up for the 4th of July weekend. Managers say sales are brisk despite the dangers, despite restrictions.

Colleen Pedersen/Fireworks manager: "NO, WE HAD RESTRICTIONS LAST YEAR IF YOU REMEMBER AND IT DIDN'T DO ANYTHING TO SALES EXCEPT INCREASE THEM. PEOPLE ARE REAL PYROS OUT THERE."

Fireworks set off a small grass fire in Murray and another one in Magna. Fire fighters quickly put them out.

But it's evidence that people are setting off fireworks even before the legal window around the holiday.

Capt. Devin Villa/Salt Lake City Fire Dept.: "WE'RE HEARING THROUGH OUR DISPATCH OFFICE, THROUGH OUR BUSINESS LINES THAT FIREWORKS ARE ALREADY BEING USED. IT'S A MISDEMEANOR."

Fireworks bring fun and tradition to the holidays, but they can also bring trouble if you're not careful.

Fire fighters and many fireworks enthusiasts share the same goal.

Jeff Armstrong/Salt Lake Resident: "WE HAVE SOME FUN, BUT IN A SAFE WAY. IT'S VERY SERIOUS STUFF."

One of the best ways to keep the holiday safe is to use fireworks properly and in acceptable places. Also, only use fireworks that you can buy at these stands... i.e. legal fireworks.

Firefighters say bottlerockets (which are illegal) cause more problems than any other firework.
