July 18, 2001--
Finally, some good news to report about that fire burning at Camp Williams.
Firefighters expect to have it contained by tonight.
The flames have destroyed more than 10,000 acres.
At one point over 150 firefighters were on the fire lines, and more than $400,000 has been spent fight the blaze.
Firefighters spent yesterday morning trying to keep the blaze away from homes at the south end of Riverton and Herriman.
Six tankers dropped fire retardant from the air, and two helicopters scooped up water and dropped it in key spots.
They were able to turn the flames away from populated areas.
Promontory
Meanwhile, Thiokol Propulsion has loaned two generators to the Golden Spike National Historic Site after a wildfire burned through nine power poles.
The fire, which has charred more than 30,000 acres near the site 32 miles west of Brigham City, was 70 percent contained yesterday, but 40 miles per hour winds have kept the fire unpredictable.
Crews have been battling the lightning-caused blaze since Saturday.
St. George
St, George firefighters say they plan to charge whoever started a brush fire there, both criminally and financially.
The fire chief says they think kids playing with fireworks started the blaze near the Virgin River.
The cost of fighting the fire could run several thousand dollars. A home was damaged by the fire and a footbridge over the river was torched.
