The 1960's, of course was full of all sorts of unusual and
'Now-in-the-history-books' events.
For those of us who were there--even as youngsters-- we still have vivid
memories of that time.
Memories of weird music, weird clothes, talk of war, talk of peace.
Utah was caught up in it too.
"There was a lively underground or counterculture going on in Salt Lake, I'm
sure throughout the '50's probably, and definitely during the '60's," says Ken
Sanders.
Was it really that wild and weird here during the '60's?
Well, believe or not, Utah did have its moments.
Students at Utah colleges and Universities regularly protested the Viet Nam
War. Gatherings at the federal building, and on the campuses were
well-attended.
New York had "Woodstock" of course. And Sugarhouse Park had, well, let's
just call it an outdoor "event," with a couple of rock bands. But, a good crowd
nonetheless!
Yes, the memories that so many of us have about the '60's in other parts of
the country, did play out here too!
Ted Capener recalls, "We weren't immune to all of that. I think it was less so
here than obviously on the coast, the east and west coast, but we weren't
immune."
To borrow a word from the '60's, there was a "Happening" in Utah, which
produced many lasting images.
More on that Monday night at 10.
