Family Support Center Services
The Midvale and Sugarhouse Family Support Centers offer the following services besides the Crisis Nurseries. Fees are charged on a sliding scale for those marked *. *Parenting Groups The Crisis Nursery is just half of the solution. Since children are not able to control the situation or change parenting patterns, a parent support component goes hand in hand with the nursery. Abused children tend to become abusing parents, so the Family Support Center seeks to break the cycle of abuse by offering the parents support in times of stress, respite care for children during crisis, and alternatives to physical punishment. Group therapy is effective because it helps to alleviate some of the problems which contribute to abuse: social isolation, low self-esteem and lack of parenting skills. One of the most important aspects of any treatment plan at the Center is that the parents become active participants in the decision making process regarding their family needs for health and well-being. The Family Support Center's role is to give support and counsel, not to remove children or to make decisions for a family. *Counseling In addition to parenting groups, the Family Support Center offers therapy on an individual and family basis to persons experiencing abuse or neglect or those who are in a situation which could lead to abuse or neglect. Children's issues are addressed through individual play therapy and children's groups. *Parent Education Classes Focuses on physical and emotional needs of children; setting behavioral goals and communication; nonabusive disciplinary techniques. Day and evening classes are available at both Sugarhouse and Midvale locations. Midvale offers Spanish language classes.
