Getting Involved With Your Child's Education
Studies
Researcher Benjamin Bloom studied people who achieved great success, or "world-class levels of accomplishment." He found that home environment was critical in helping individuals achieve excellence. Their families shared some of these characteristics:
- Hardworking
- Believed in doing your best, no matter what the task
- Everyone, including children, set goals and used time well
- Self-discipline
Bloom said, "If the talented individuals we studied had been reared in a very different home environment.. it is not likely that they would have reached the level or type of talent development [they did]."
University of Illinois Professor Herbert Walberg reviewed thousands of studies on educational productivity. Here are his suggestions for parents:
- Provide books and a place for study
- Observe routines for homework, meals, and bedtime
- Limit the hours for after-school jobs
- Discuss school events
- Help students meet deadlines
Groundwork For Success
The American Association of School Administrators says parents need to pay attention to four areas, in order to give their kids the basic skills that will prepare them for a successful school experience:
- Self Confidence
Let children know you have confidence in them, and that it's okay to make occasional mistakes.
- Discipline
Clear and consistent rules at home help kids adjust to rules at school.
- Good Nutrition
Children who eat a good breakfast often perform better in school that those who skip breakfast.
- Good Health
Includes exercise and adequate sleep.
