July 14, 2000

These days, lots of professional athletes are doing advertisements for great deals on sports equipment. And some internet sites promise the best deals of all.

So, we put some of those sports websites to the test in a special report we call "E- Exam."

News Specialist Scott Light hit the links to find the best deals on golf equipment.

You know the names: Ping, Titleist, Callaway, Ben Hogan.

You know the sound of a sweet drive.

You may know some ways to lower your score, but do you know how to lower your price on golf equipment?

Golfer Rich Bennett says, "There're a lot of good deals out there. You just have to be patient. Either search the internet or look in newspapers for sale ads."

That's what we did, except we didn't shop sale prices, just regular prices.

Big Bertha Hawkeye Driver
Pro Golf Superstore $349.99
Uinta Golf $349.99
Gart Sports $349.99
Rose Park Pro Shop $375
Fogdog.com $399.99
Chipshot.com $399.99
First item, a Callaway Big Bertha Hawkeye Driver. Pro Golf Superstore, Uinta Golf and Gart Sports all quoted the same price.

The price at the Rose Park Golf Course Pro Shop was $375. The internet prices turned out to be highest.

Titleist Tour Prestige 100
Rose Park $48
Fogdog.com $41.99
Gart Sports $39.99
Chipshot.com $38.99
Pro Golf Superstore $36.99
Uinta Golf $35.99
We then priced a box of balls-- Titleist Tour Prestige 100's.

Uinta Golf handed in the low scorecard at $35.99. That's a $12 difference between the lowest and highest.

Maxfli Belt Bag
Gart Sports $149.99
Fogdog.com $139.99
Chipshot.com $139.99

We also priced the same golf bag at three locations. There was a $10 savings on the websites. Fogdog and Chipshot both had it for $139.99.

When buying on the internet, some golfers say the disadvantage is on big ticket items like clubs, where you're buying from a picture.

Also, most golf stores will evaluate your swing and what type of club should go with it.

Glen Spencer of the Rose Park Golf Course says, "I don't think you can put down your money and take a brand new club, and say, 'I hope I can hit it well. I hope it fits me, the shaft flex and the loft.'"

If you order on the internet, make sure you check shipping and handling.

Chipshot and MammothGolf offer free shipping. Fogdog charges $4.99 for shipping.
