Child Remains Critical Following
Tree Incident

June 13, 2000

The little girl critically injured in last week's accident in Provo Canyon, remains in Primary Children's Intensive Care Unit.

Four-year-old Emma Sorensen was crushed when a tree fell on a picnic table in South Fork Park, killing her grandmother and cousin.

Emma suffered skull and pelvic fractures and a spinal injury, which is getting worse. She can no longer feel below her shoulders.

Her parents told our Carole Mikita they still have a lot of hope and faith.

Norm and Ingrid Sorensen/ Emma's parents: "I WOULD SAY IN OUR HEARTS, IT LOOKS VERY GOOD. BUT WHAT DO THE DOCTORS THINK? YOU'LL GET OPINIONS LIKE 'SHE'S GOT PERMANENT DAMAGE,' 'THIS GIRL'S GOING TO BE LOOKING AT A LIFETIME SITUATION HERE.' SO, WE'RE HEARING THOSE KIND OF THINGS. SO, IT'S KIND OF A TEST OF FAITH, I GUESS YOU'D SAY."

A number of people have generously stepped forward to help the Sorensens. They have set up a trust fund:
